KIEV, Ukraine -- In 2014, Ukraine is going to submit an application to host the 2022 Winter Olympics, head of the national Olympic committee Serhy Bubka told journalists Aug. 2.
By 2014, Ukraine must come up with a concept of 2022 Olympics. Bubka said he confident Ukraine can win the right to hold the games, even though it must prepare for the Olympics from scratch.
“Usually, it takes 7 years to get ready to host the Olympics. Other countries have also started from scratch, and we will do the same,” Bubka stressed.
Simultaneously, VP Borys Kolesnykov said, on the heels of his visit to the Carpathian mountains training centers, that it would be possible to build the infrastructure needed for the Winter Olympics.
“If we start preparations now, the Olympic committee will accept our application,” he said.
It is too early to speak of the investments needed, Kolesnykov explained. Canada’s Vancouver, where all the infrastructure was available, needed 10 billion dollars in investments.
“It is expensive if one prepares for the games for the first time. However, if we invest US$1 bln annually we stand a good chance to be ready by 2022. Now we have to persuade the International Olympics Committee”, he added.
Kolesnykov evaded to specify the venue of the Winter Olympics, Ivano-Frankivsk or Lviv. But he said Lviv looks more attractive as there will be a modern airport [to be built for Euro-2012 soccer championship], proximity to borders and favorable climate.
The official also said conditions in oblasts Zakarpatya and Ivano-Frankivsk will also be studied.
